So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?” – Nehemiah 6:3
Each year, I dedicate my first blog to declaring great things over you. This year, I want to declare that you will remain in your position of authority and that you won’t come down!
In the book of Nehemiah, we find Nehemiah himself working to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. This was important work because broken walls meant that anyone could invade and destroy. While he is working, several people come to challenge the work that he is doing. They schemed. They plotted. They harassed. They gossiped about him.
But Nehemiah just kept on building.
Eventually, they ask him to come down and talk to them, but Nehemiah responds with our scripture for today: “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?” – Nehemiah 6:3. Basically, Nehemiah asks why should I stop what I’m doing to converse with those of you who are doing nothing. Why should I stop doing what God has told me to do to come down and explain it to you or reason with you. Why would I leave the main attraction to engage with a distraction?
Can you make that your mentality this year? Can you be so focused on what God has called you to build (your relationship with Him, your marriage, your family, career, ministry) that you refuse to engage with distractions? Focus on what is most important. Leave every petty argument behind. Stop trying to explain what God told you to do and just do it. Obey God like never before.
I declare that this is the year that you are:
powerful and not petty
laser focused on what God has called us to build
in competiton with no one
refusing to engage in arguments that have no purpose
more concerned with what God said than what others said
determined to keep building and not come down
In 52 days, Nehemiah (and the people) completed the wall. They did what others could not do in years. Imagine what you can accomplish when you refuse to come down and engage with all of the distractions!
I’m staying focused this year. What about you?
Think about what God has called you to build. Ask Him to show you the distractions that would hinder you from building it and how to eliminate them.
