Can two walk together, unless they are agreed? – Amos 3:3
Do you know what is cited as one of the main reasons for divorce? Irreconcilable differences.
According to Merriam-Webster, irreconcilable differences is defined as the “inability to agree on most things or on important things”.
Two people, who once loved each other deeply and saw lots of things in common, somehow no longer can get on the same page with each other.
This doesn’t happen over night. Irreconcilable differences develop when a spouse constantly chooses “me” over “we”. They develop when we allow little disagreements to become major conflicts.
When we don’t address issues.
When we harbor resentment.
When we allow work (or church or social media or friendships) to consume our time and leave nothing for our spouse.
When we stop talking, touching, and spending time together.
Basically, we find that we have come to irreconcilable differences when don’t put any effort into our marriages or express our love, gratitude and appreciation for what we have.
Irreconcilable differences are totally preventable in most cases. The prescription is simply time and attention. We can’t let our marriages drift along until one day we see that we are too far from where we should be.
Talk to your spouse. Check in frequently. Listen for their needs and express your needs. Be open and honest. Commit to addressing problems and concerns expeditiously. Seek outside help if necessary.
Enjoy each other.
Agree with each other…every opportunity that you can…then work it out quickly when you don’t.
What will you do to maintain agreement in your marriage?
