For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers – Matthew 23:4
It’s time to get rid of false responsibilities.
You know…the things you take on because you feel like you should do it even though you really don’t have the desire, time, or capacity to do them.
False responsibilities are the responsibilities that we take on ourselves or allow others to put on us that were never really ours to handle.
I can recall so many times that I took on a role or responsibility because “someone needed to do it” or because I “could” do it. I may have done it in previous years, or maybe I was good at it. The problem was that I should not have been doing it. I felt a false obligation from a person or because I held a position or title.
False obligations and responsibilities steal your attention from the people, places, and things that should have your attention. They can be distractions, and often, they will feel burdensome.
As a wife (and mom and all of your other hats), you have plenty of responsibilities…real ones. Don’t continue to fill your plate with unnecessary things to handle.
I encourage you to take a close look at the things you have agreed to do. Prayerfully determine which of those things are real God-given responsibilities, and which are “heavy burdens, hard to bear” that you’ve allowed to be laid on your shoulders.
You’ll find that once you unload the false responsibilities you will have much more time and space for the things that really matter.
