So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate – Matthew 19:6
The idea of marriage is great, right? When we hear the scripture in Genesis 2:24 that says “and they shall become one flesh” we think it sounds pretty simple, don’t we? We imagine ourselves reciting vows at the altar, moving in together, and living happily ever after. The husband brings his stuff. The wife brings her stuff, and the live side by side forever.
That image is like stacking Legos on top of each other. You know the blocks we played with as children. You can take a red block and stack it on top of a green block to create one bigger block, but nothing really changed in either of the blocks…and they are very easy to separate.
That sounds good, but it is not a complete picture of how two become one.
Marriage is more like taking two containers of Play-Doh and mixing them together (I used to have a fit when my kids did this, lol!). It’s sometimes messy, and once mixed together, it is very difficult to separate the colors back into their individual containers.
And for us as Believers, Christ then takes a mold of Himself and presses it into the ball of Play-Doh created by the husband and wife so that extra, unneeded portions are trimmed off.
We become one with our spouse by mixing our lives with theirs, operating in truth and transparency. We become one by being open to change and doing things a different way. We become one by serving and sometimes sacrificing.
We become one by remembering that we love the person we vowed to spend the rest of our lives with, and then treating them like we love them.
We become one day by day and choice by choice keeping in mind that sometimes things aren’t an issue of right or wrong but for better or for worse.
It’s my prayer that you grow closer and closer together as the days progress!
If you would like to learn more about oneness, I encourage you to head over to www.believingwives.com and subscribe so that you can be one of the first to grab my new book, ‘Undivided’ that stresses how being one with God affects every area of our lives.
…and if you want more we are diving deeper into these strategies during our weekly bible study this month as we focus on “Barriers to Oneness”. Consider this a personal invitation to join us each Tuesday night at 7pm EST via Zoom.
